We are delighted that you have stopped by to find out more about us.
We started the charity in November 2011 because we wanted to help support the wonderful staff at the hospital who look after children in the Special Care Baby Unit and Robin Ward. After conducting some research, we also found that there was a great need to help support those families whose children are being treated in the UK and to purchase medication and medical equipment when these costs were not met by the States of Jersey.
In our first year, we won a grant of £6,000 from the Jersey Water 100th Anniversary fund and used the money to purchase a Baby Pod Transportation Unit for Robin Ward. The unit allows for the safe transport of infants from Jersey to the UK. For the next few years, we hosted several events each year such as Cake Sales at the hospital and a Charity Abseil.
In 2015, we partnered with the Friends of SCBU charity to host ‘A Night in Neverland’ Ball. The partnership was such a success that we have joined forces the same year to host the annual event The 5K for Jersey’s Little Wonders. The event has been growing each year and is now a staple of the Jersey event calendar. In 2016, we held our first It’s A Knockout Jersey event. The event was a huge success with 50 teams competing and more than 3,000 spectators.
In 2017, we held a two-day event selling out the team spaces for both days.
Together with Friends of SCBU, we sponsored a room for Jersey families at the Ronald McDonald House in Southampton. The donation allowed Jersey families to stay throughout the year without making the recommended £25 per night donation.
In 2015, we launched our Parent Pack initiative with the support of the staff from Santander International. The parent pack is a bag of essential supplies provided to Robin Ward for families who find themselves staying unexpectedly on the ward. The initiative is now in its third year and is supported by our current sponsor, Ports of Jersey.
We are very happy to be working with the Family Home Nursing Care Community Nursing team to provide equipment and financial assistance to children in their care. The bulk of our donations are given to families whose children are being treated in the UK. We can provide funding for flights, accommodation, transport, subsistence, childcare, and associated expenses. In 2016, we purchased three custom-made physio-therapy bicycles for children with special needs.
In 2016, we funded the colourful decorations for the walls of the newly refurbished Robin Ward. The decals have made the ward a warmer and more welcoming environment for the young patients. In addition, we purchased toys, DVDs and children’s plates and cutlery for the ward. In 2018, we will fund the decoration of the remaining treatment rooms as well as the children’s areas of Accident and Emergency with the support of our sponsors, Ports of Jersey.
In October 2017, we held our first Robin Ball, in aid of Robin Ward. The event was a huge success and will allow us to purchase a 3D Distraction Centre for Robin Ward in 2018. The distraction centre is an entertainment system used to distract children during lengthy or painful procedures and have been shown to reduce the stress levels of patients, their parents and caregivers.
